One of the most famous legends about Montserrat mountain is the one that explains the discovery of the Romanesque carving of the Virgin Mary with Child, the carving known today as the Moreneta.

The legend explains that some shepherds who were herding their sheeps around the mountain saw a celestial light coming from a cave. The shepherds, overwhelmed, decided to explain what they saw to the priest of Monistrol de Montserrat, the village located at the foot of the mountain.

The priest explained the facts to the bishop of Vic, who went up the mountain with the shepherds to investigate what was going on. When they arrived, they found the famous image of the Moreneta, the iconic Romanesque carving of Montserrat. The bishop decided to take it, but when they were crossing the area where nowadays we can find the Monastery, the story says that they could not continue because the image became so heavy that there was no way to move it of the ground.

This fact was interpreted by the bishop as a God’s will. The bishop understood that the Virgin did not want to be transferred to another place, so he asked to build a chapel there so that the Virgin could be venerated.

This legend is one of the most famous in the Catalan territory. If you want to know more stories, more details, or visit the Moreneta, the Patron Saint of Catalonia, her chapel, or the majestic Basilica, do not miss Julia Travel day tours.
