Málaga, the muse of Picasso

Picasso's personal and artistic development is undoubtedly influenced by his childhood lived in Málaga, his birth city. Despite the few years that Picasso spent there, it was always a place of inspiration for one of the greatest representatives of the cubist movement.

Pablo Ruiz Picasso was born on 1881, at 15 Merced Square. His birth house, located in the centre of the city, is the current headquarters of the foundation that bears his name.

Other places of his childhood, such as the church of Santiago Apostol - where he was baptized- and San Rafael school, are reflected in different works of the artist. So do the pigeons that flew next to his house, represented in different drawings.

Picasso's childhood in Malaga was not only a source of inspiration for his later work. This period also marked the beginning of his career. At the age of 8, he painted Hercules with the Apple - his first oil-, and El Picador Amarillo - where La Malagueta bullring is represented-.

Despite the deep influence that Malaga had on the artist’s work, he only spent a brief stage of his life there. At the age of 10, his family was settled in A Coruña and will only return for a summer vacation. Picasso will visit Málaga for the last time in 1901, at the age of 20 years.
